Introduction:

Tree Frontiers became involved in this exciting project during the early planning stages. Our initial tree survey and subsequent report guided the design process which skillfully incorporated a modern and striking plan within the existing topography. The overall layout went through a number of changes during this process and we were able to provide further arboricultural input as required. Plans were submitted to the LPA and have since been granted permission.

Background:

Tree Frontiers were approached by Design Storey, an architectural firm with whom we have worked on a number of projects. They were in the early stages of planning a new wellness area and garage adjacent to a contemporary home in The Cotswolds.

The Opportunity:

The site of this development opportunity was the existing tennis courts, surrounded on two sides by well-established tall trees, and sitting at the top of a sloping garden. The client wanted to remove the tennis court and replace it with a car gallery, golf simulator, gym and spa. This presented the design team with a number of challenges including the constraints imposed by the trees. We undertook a detailed survey of the trees and identified those that would require removal in order for the proposed plans to be implemented.  We recorded that there were no high or moderate quality trees on the proposed site, and we also noted that there would be sufficient space within the overall boundary to accommodate replacement planting to compensate for the loss of trees. Using the resulting tree constraints plan the design team were able to review their plans and adjust them to minimise tree loss and incorporate replacement planting options.

The Results:

The design team worked in collaboration with us as they refined the plans. Tree removal was targeted at those trees of lowest arboricultural quality, ensuring the retention of the better quality specimens which provide screening benefits along the boundaries of the site. Plans were submitted to the LPA in July, and consent for the works was granted in August.
