27 Feb Burford School Human Library
Following Chipping Norton School’s Human Library event last month, it was great to be able to attend a similar event at Burford School this month. Children spoke to business representatives for 3-4 minutes before moving onto the next attendee. The focus was on pupils getting a feel for the broad range of careers and necessary qualifications.
Steve attended this event and was asked to bring a ‘prop’ so that students could guess his occupation. Rather than just one prop, Steve took some of his essential surveying kit; DBH tape, compass, nylon hammer, laser measure, hypsometer and probe.
It was a tough challenge and rather unsurprisingly no pupils out of 232 attendees managed to guess correctly. However, a few eagle eyed spotted his branded gillet and hazarded a guess at ‘tree surgeon’.
After explaining the role several students expressed an interest, often followed by ‘I never knew a job like this existed’. Clearly there is more we can be doing to raise the profile of arboriculture.
Hopefully we have inspired at least one pupil to pursue a career in trees!
